Differences between Alloy Steel Pipes and Carbon Steel Pipes

I. Core Composition Differences

Carbon Steel Pipes: Primarily composed of iron and carbon, with a carbon content typically between 0.06% and 1.5%.

Alloy Steel Pipes: Based on carbon steel, additional alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and vanadium are added.

II. Strength Level Differences

Carbon Steel Pipes: Yield strength is typically around 245-345 MPa.

Alloy Steel Pipes: Through alloy design and heat treatment, yield strength can easily reach over 500 MPa.

III. Temperature Resistance Differences

Carbon Steel Pipes: Limited high-temperature performance; operating temperature typically does not exceed 425 degrees Celsius, above which strength decreases significantly; prone to brittleness at low temperatures.

Alloy Steel Pipes: Excellent high-temperature performance; for example, chromium-molybdenum steel maintains good strength above 500 degrees Celsius; also exhibits good low-temperature toughness; for example, nickel-containing steel is suitable for cryogenic environments.

IV. Corrosion Resistance Differences

Carbon Steel Pipes: Moderate corrosion resistance; requires additional protection such as coatings in humid or corrosive environments. Alloy steel pipes: Their corrosion resistance is significantly improved by adding alloying elements such as chromium.

V. Cost Differences

Carbon steel pipes: Inexpensive, typically 30%-50% cheaper than alloy steel pipes of the same specifications.

Alloy steel pipes: More expensive.

VI. Typical Application Differences

Carbon steel pipes: Used in ordinary building structures, low-pressure fluid (water, gas) transportation, and general mechanical parts.

Alloy steel pipes: Used in power plant boilers, high-temperature and high-pressure pipelines in petrochemicals, aerospace, and other critical and demanding applications.

VII. How to Choose

Choose carbon steel pipes: If the operating environment is mild (normal temperature, normal pressure, no strong corrosion), and the project budget is limited, carbon steel pipes offer excellent cost-effectiveness.

Choose alloy steel pipes: If facing harsh environments such as high temperature, high pressure, low temperature, or corrosive media, although the initial investment is higher, alloy steel pipes ensure long-term safe operation and have lower maintenance costs. Considering the entire service life, they may be more economical.
