Differences Between Precision Seamless Steel Pipes and Hot-Rolled Steel Pipes
Date:2026-11-06
1. Process Differences
Precision Seamless Pipes: Produced by taking hot-rolled "raw" (as-rolled) pipes and subjecting them to further cold-drawing or cold-rolling. This is a secondary forming process that must be accompanied by stress-relief annealing to eliminate work hardening.
Standard Hot-Rolled Seamless Pipes: Formed in a single high-temperature hot-rolling process with no subsequent cold-finishing. (Welded pipes, by contrast, are produced by coiling and welding steel strips.)
2. Precision (A Key Concern for International Clients)
Precision Pipes: Outer and inner diameters, wall thickness, straightness, and ovality are all strictly controlled. Many clients in the hydraulic cylinder industry use these pipes directly for honing or even for immediate assembly.
Standard Hot-Rolled Seamless Pipes: Characterized by significant dimensional variation and uneven wall thickness (thicker on one side, thinner on the other). The focus is solely on meeting basic strength requirements rather than achieving precise dimensions.
3. Surface Quality
Precision Seamless Pipes: Feature a bright, "black" (oxide-free/clean) finish or a bright-annealed surface; they are free of heavy mill scale and have minimal oil residue.
Standard Hot-Rolled Pipes: Covered in black iron-oxide scale; the inner surfaces are rough and prone to rolling marks or defects.
